From Greek and Roman temples to the medieval churches of Europe and 19th century homes of the Southern U.S., architectural elements such as decorative columns, balusters, and corbels have added character to buildings for thousands of years. Architectural columns and their impressively carved capitals create dramatic exterior entrances while details such as newels and corner posts add class to interior areas with a wide variety of styles, from the ornate Tudor and Victorian to the clean lines of Craftsman and Prairie style architecture.
In the past many architectural details, particularly exterior elements, were frequently carved of stone. In modern times wood capitals, balusters, newels, and decorative corbels have become more common, in part due to the wide variation of color and detailed carving options available in wood. These architectural elements were each originally hand carved with attention to quality and detail. Over the course of time, hand carving became less common as machine carving became a cheap and efficient option for creating wooden architectural details. However, the art of fine hand carving remained, passed down through generations of master wood carvers.
Master Wood Carvers continues this tradition of dedication and excellence with our 4th generation carvers. We use premium woods to craft high-quality custom wood carvings and can create any type of carving, from animals and crosses to intricate wood corbels and other architectural details.
